Surf Camps in Shimoda

Shimoda, a gem on the Izu Peninsula, offers some of Japan's best surfing. With its stunning coastline, you'll find a variety of breaks suitable for all levels. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting, Shimoda's got a wave for you.

Shimoda's Surf Scene

Shimoda, located on the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula, is a surfer's paradise. With its beautiful white sand beaches, crystal clear water, and a variety of waves, it's no wonder that surfers from all over Japan and the world flock to this charming coastal town. The vibe is relaxed and welcoming, and you'll find a mix of locals and visitors sharing the waves.

The Waves

Shimoda is blessed with a variety of surf spots that cater to all levels of surfers. Thanks to its unique geography, the area picks up swells from the east, south, and west, making it a consistent year-round surf destination.

  • Shirahama: This is one of the most popular beaches in Shimoda, and for good reason. It's a long, sandy beach with a point break that offers long, mellow rides, perfect for longboarders and beginners. When a south swell hits, the waves can get more powerful, offering fun sections for more experienced surfers.
  • Tatadohama: This is another consistent beach break that's popular with both longboarders and shortboarders. The waves here are generally soft and easy to ride, making it a great spot for beginners and intermediate surfers.
  • Iritahama: This beach is known for its powerful and hollow waves, especially when a good swell is running. It's a favorite among experienced surfers looking for a challenge. On smaller days, it can be a fun spot for intermediate surfers.
  • Ohama: This is the most powerful and challenging wave in Shimoda. When it's on, it produces world-class barrels that are not for the faint of heart. This spot is for advanced surfers only.

Best Time to Surf

You can find waves in Shimoda all year round, but the best and most consistent season is from August to March. During this time, you can expect to find good swells from typhoons and winter storms. The summer months (June to August) are also a great time to visit, with warm water and fun, smaller waves, perfect for learning or just cruising on a longboard.

Who is it for?

Shimoda has something for everyone. Beginners will love the gentle waves at beaches like Shirahama and Tatadohama, while intermediate and advanced surfers can challenge themselves at spots like Iritahama and Ohama. The area is also very family-friendly, with plenty of other activities to enjoy besides surfing.

The Vibe

What makes Shimoda so special is its unique blend of world-class waves, stunning natural beauty, and rich culture. The town has a laid-back, old-school surf vibe that's hard to find these days. After a long day of surfing, you can relax in one of the many natural hot springs (onsen), enjoy some delicious local seafood, or explore the town's historic streets.
