Surf Camps in Bull Bay

Bull Bay in Saint Andrew, Jamaica, is the heart of the island's surf scene. Home to the legendary Jamnesia Surf Camp, it offers a welcoming vibe and consistent waves for all levels, from mellow rollers to powerful hurricane swells.

The Heart of Jamaican Surfing

Bull Bay, located in the parish of Saint Andrew, is the undisputed epicenter of the Jamaican surfing scene. Just a short drive from Kingston, this vibrant community is home to a passionate group of local surfers and the legendary Jamnesia Surf Camp, the first of its kind on the island. The vibe here is incredibly welcoming, with a mellow and laid-back atmosphere that invites surfers of all backgrounds to share the waves and enjoy the Caribbean spirit.

The Waves

The main attraction in Bull Bay is Copa, a classic right-hand reef break that offers something for everyone. On smaller days, you'll find fun, manageable waves perfect for honing your skills. But when a solid swell rolls in, especially during the hurricane season, Copa can transform into a world-class wave, handling everything from head-high peelers to massive 20-foot faces. The wave breaks over a flat reef, which helps to create a consistent takeoff spot, and with the right conditions, you can score rides of 50 to 100 yards. The water is a beautiful, clear blue, though it can get a bit stirred up when the wind picks up.

Best Time to Go

The prime surfing season in Bull Bay runs from November to March, when consistent swells from the north and east light up the local breaks. The late summer months of August and September can also be excellent, as the hurricane season can send powerful groundswells towards the island. While the waves are generally best in the mornings before the wind picks up, you can find fun surf at any time of day.

Skill Level

While Bull Bay can be a fun spot for surfers of all levels, it is best suited for intermediate to advanced riders, especially when the swell gets bigger. The reef bottom at Copa requires a certain level of skill and awareness, and the powerful hurricane swells can be challenging even for experienced surfers. However, on smaller days, it can be a great place for less experienced surfers to push their limits and learn from the local experts at Jamnesia.

What Makes It Unique

What truly sets Bull Bay apart is its authentic and vibrant surf culture. This is not a tourist-trap surf town; it's a real, living community where surfing is a way of life. The Wilmot family, who run Jamnesia, are pioneers of Jamaican surfing, and their passion and dedication have helped to create a thriving and supportive scene. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a curious beginner, you'll be welcomed with open arms and treated to a truly unique and unforgettable surfing experience.
