Surf Camps in Gerupuk

Gerupuk Bay in Lombok is a surfer's paradise, offering a variety of waves suitable for all levels. From the mellow rollers of Don Don to the more challenging rights at Outside Gerupuk, this Indonesian gem has something for everyone.

The Lowdown on Gerupuk's Surf Scene

Gerupuk, a quiet fishing village on the south coast of Lombok, has become a must-visit destination for surfers of all stripes. Nestled in a massive bay, Gerupuk offers a variety of waves that are just a short boat ride away. The local economy, once solely reliant on fishing, now thrives on surf tourism, creating a unique blend of traditional village life and modern surf culture. The vibe is laid-back and friendly, with local boat captains ready to whisk you away to the best waves of the day.

The Waves: A Breakdown of the Breaks

Gerupuk Bay is home to five distinct surf breaks, each with its own character and appeal. The most famous of these is Inside Gerupuk, a forgiving right-hander that's perfect for longboarders and intermediates looking to hone their skills. For those seeking a bit more of a challenge, Outside Gerupuk offers a more powerful right-hand wave that comes alive during larger swells.

If you're looking for a mellower experience, Don-Don is an A-frame peak that's ideal for beginners and intermediates. It's often less crowded than Inside Gerupuk, making it a great place to escape the hustle and bustle. For absolute beginners and kids, Kiddies provides a gentle, rolling wave that's perfect for getting your first taste of surfing. Finally, for experienced surfers, Outside Left offers a fast, hollow wave that can be a real treat on the right day.

Best Time to Score Waves

While Gerupuk offers rideable waves year-round, the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, you can expect consistent swells and clean conditions. The shoulder seasons (April and October) can also be a great time to visit, with fewer crowds and still plenty of waves to be had.

Who is Gerupuk For?

Gerupuk is a versatile surf destination that caters to a wide range of skill levels. Beginners will find plenty of gentle waves to learn on, while intermediates will have a blast exploring the various breaks in the bay. Advanced surfers will also find challenging waves to test their skills, especially during larger swells. Whether you're a solo traveler, a couple, or a family, Gerupuk has something to offer everyone.

The Gerupuk Vibe

What makes Gerupuk truly special is the unique experience of accessing the waves by boat. This not only adds to the adventure but also allows you to easily hop between different breaks depending on the conditions. The stunning scenery, with its dramatic cliffs and turquoise waters, provides a breathtaking backdrop for your surf sessions. The friendly locals and the laid-back atmosphere make Gerupuk a place you'll want to return to again and again.
