Surf Camps in Ayampe

Ayampe, a tiny fishing village on Ecuador's Pacific coast, offers surfers consistent waves, a bohemian atmosphere, and an authentic South American surf experience. This laid-back paradise has become a favorite among traveling surfers seeking quality waves without the crowds.

About Ayampe

Located in the Manabi province, about 45 minutes north of Montanita, Ayampe remains refreshingly undeveloped compared to its party-focused neighbor. The village sits at the edge of the Machalilla National Park, surrounded by tropical dry forest and pristine coastline. With a population of just a few hundred, Ayampe offers a genuine escape from the modern world.

Surf Spots

Ayampe's main beach break offers consistent, fun waves suitable for all levels. The wave breaks both left and right, with the best conditions typically in the morning before the wind picks up. Nearby spots include Las Tunas to the north and the more powerful breaks around Puerto Lopez. The area receives swell year-round, making it a reliable destination for surf trips.

Best Time to Surf

Ecuador's surf season runs year-round, but the best waves typically arrive from December to April during the wet season. This period brings larger swells and warmer water temperatures around 24-26°C. The dry season (May-November) offers smaller but cleaner waves and cooler water around 20-22°C. No wetsuit needed year-round!

Local Culture

Ayampe embodies the essence of slow travel. The village has a growing community of yoga practitioners, artists, and surfers who have made this their home. Accommodation ranges from simple cabanas to eco-lodges, and local restaurants serve fresh ceviche and traditional Ecuadorian cuisine. The nearby Machalilla National Park offers opportunities for whale watching (June-September) and visiting the famous Isla de la Plata.
