Surf Camps in Veraguas

Veraguas, Panama, is a surfer's paradise on the Pacific coast. With world-class waves like the legendary right-hand point break at Santa Catalina, and mellow beach breaks for beginners, this uncrowded gem offers something for every surfer.

The Vibe

Veraguas is the heart of Panama's burgeoning surf scene. This central province on the Pacific coast is a lush, green paradise with a laid-back vibe that feels like Costa Rica did decades ago. The lineups are often uncrowded, the locals are friendly, and the focus is purely on the waves. The main hub is the small fishing village of Santa Catalina, which has become the de facto capital of surfing in Panama, attracting surfers from all over the world to its legendary breaks.

The Waves

Veraguas serves up a smorgasbord of waves for every appetite. From mellow beach breaks to powerful, world-class point breaks, you'll find your perfect ride here.

Santa Catalina

The jewel in Veraguas' crown is Santa Catalina. This spot is famous for La Punta, a legendary right-hand point break that peels over a volcanic reef. On a good swell, it can produce long, fast, and hollow barrels that will test the best. It's a wave for the more experienced surfer, but the reward is a ride you'll never forget.

For those not quite ready for the challenge of La Punta, Estero Beach offers a more forgiving option. This beautiful beach break has gentle, rolling waves perfect for beginners and longboarders. It's a great place to learn or to just enjoy a relaxed session.

Other Breaks

Beyond Santa Catalina, Veraguas has a host of other quality surf spots. Playa Morrillo is a local favorite, with a punchy A-frame that can get hollow. To the east of the Gulf of Montijo, you'll find Playa Malena, another great option with consistent waves.

Best Time to Surf

The prime surf season in Veraguas is during the rainy season, from April to November. This is when consistent south swells light up the point breaks and deliver the biggest and best waves. The dry season, from December to March, can still have fun waves, especially for beginners, but it's less consistent.

Skill Level

Veraguas has something for everyone. Beginners will feel right at home at Estero Beach, while intermediate and advanced surfers will be in heaven at La Punta and the other reef breaks. The variety of waves makes it a great destination for a mixed-ability group.

What Makes It Unique

What sets Veraguas apart is its raw, untouched beauty. This isn't a place with high-rise hotels and crowded beaches. It's a place where you can connect with nature, surf world-class waves with just a few other people, and experience the authentic Panamanian surf culture. The fact that Santa Catalina has hosted the ISA World Surfing Games is a testament to the quality of the waves here.
