Lisbon, Portugal's charismatic capital, invites you to explore its rich history, immerse yourself in the soulful sounds of Fado music, and savor the vibrant cityscape adorned with colorful streets and stunning viewpoints.

Discover Lisbon

Welcome to Lisbon, the enchanting capital city of Portugal that beckons visitors with its rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking beauty. Nestled on the banks of the Tagus River, Lisbon captivates with its colorful streets, charming neighborhoods, and an irresistible blend of old-world charm and modern energy.

Begin your exploration in the historic heart of the city, Baixa. Marvel at the grandeur of Praça do Comércio, Lisbon's main square, and wander through its elegant streets lined with shops, cafes, and historical landmarks. Ascend the steep hills using the iconic yellow tram or the traditional "elétrico" and immerse yourself in the narrow alleys of Alfama, the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon. Lose yourself in its labyrinthine streets, discover hidden viewpoints, and listen to the melancholic strains of Fado music pouring out from traditional taverns.

For a taste of Lisbon's cultural heritage, visit Belém. Explore the iconic Belém Tower, a symbol of Portugal's Age of Discovery, and marvel at the ornate architecture of the Jerónimos Monastery. Don't forget to indulge in the world-famous Pastéis de Belém, a delectable custard tart that has become a culinary icon of the city.

Lisbon's vibrant atmosphere comes alive in the Bairro Alto district. Wander through its narrow streets during the day, and as the sun sets, experience the lively nightlife with its trendy bars, live music venues, and cozy fado houses. Join the locals in revelry and immerse yourself in the infectious energy of Lisbon's nightlife scene.

To escape the urban bustle, explore the charming district of Chiado. Admire its elegant buildings, boutique shops, and historic cafes, such as A Brasileira, a gathering place for artists and intellectuals throughout history. Enjoy panoramic views of the city from the elevated São Jorge Castle, where you can soak in the stunning vistas of Lisbon's rooftops, the Tagus River, and the Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge.

Coastal Escapes

Lisbon's proximity to the Atlantic Ocean offers the perfect opportunity to unwind on beautiful beaches. Just a short drive from the city center, you'll find the picturesque coastal towns of Cascais and Estoril. Relax on golden sands, soak up the sun, or indulge in water sports such as surfing or sailing.

Culinary Delights

No visit to Lisbon is complete without savoring its culinary delights. Sample fresh seafood at one of the traditional "marisqueiras," and don't miss the chance to try the hearty and flavorful Portuguese dishes like bacalhau (salted codfish) and grilled sardines.

Lisbon truly captivates with its rich heritage, cultural treasures, and warm hospitality. Whether you're exploring its historic landmarks, indulging in delicious cuisine, or simply getting lost in its charming streets, Lisbon offers a vibrant and unforgettable experience that will leave you longing to return.

The best time to surf in Lisbon depends on your skill level. For beginners, the summer months from June to September offer smaller, more manageable waves and warmer water temperatures. For more experienced surfers, the winter months from October to April bring larger, more powerful swells from the Atlantic.

Lisbon offers a variety of surf spots suitable for all skill levels. Beginners can enjoy the gentle waves at beaches like Carcavelos and Costa da Caparica. Intermediate and advanced surfers can find more challenging waves at spots like Praia Grande and Guincho. There are also many surf schools in the area that offer lessons for all levels.

Water temperatures in Lisbon vary throughout the year. In the summer, the water is a comfortable 18-20°C (64-68°F), and a 3/2mm wetsuit is usually sufficient. In the winter, the water temperature drops to around 14-16°C (57-61°F), and a 4/3mm wetsuit is recommended to stay warm.

Besides your surfboard and wetsuit, be sure to pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect you from the sun. A reusable water bottle is a good idea to stay hydrated. For evenings, pack some warmer clothes as it can get cool, especially outside of the summer months. Don't forget to bring a good attitude and an appetite for adventure!

Lisbon is famous for its delicious food and vibrant culture. Be sure to try the local pastries, especially the Pastéis de Nata. Fresh seafood is also a must-try, with grilled sardines being a local favorite. The city has a rich history and is known for its beautiful architecture, Fado music, and friendly locals.

The cost of a surf trip to Lisbon can vary depending on your budget and travel style. Accommodation can range from budget-friendly hostels to more luxurious hotels. A meal at a local restaurant can cost around €10-15, and a beer is typically €2-3. You can find more information on our Lisbon surf camps page.

Lisbon is a relatively safe city, and the surf spots are generally safe as well. However, it's always important to be aware of your surroundings and to surf within your limits. Be mindful of rips and currents, and never surf alone. If you're unsure about the conditions, it's always best to ask a local surfer or a lifeguard.

When you're not surfing, there are plenty of other things to see and do in and around Lisbon. Visit the historic Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, explore the charming streets of the Alfama district, or take a day trip to the fairytale castles of Sintra. You can also visit the nearby fishing village of Ericeira, a World Surfing Reserve.
