Surf Camps in Nazaré

Nazaré is the undisputed capital of big wave surfing, where pros chase down record-breaking liquid mountains. While not a beginner's paradise, it offers thrilling challenges for experienced surfers and a breathtaking spectacle for all.

The Lowdown on Nazaré's Surf Scene

Nazaré, once a sleepy fishing town on Portugal's Silver Coast, has exploded onto the global surf scene as the undisputed capital of big wave surfing. The town itself retains its traditional charm, with cobbled streets and fishing boats, but the energy shifts dramatically when the swell rolls in. The iconic lighthouse at the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo becomes a grandstand for a truly awesome spectacle, as surfers on jet skis tackle liquid mountains.

The Waves: From Giants to Beach Breaks

The main event in Nazaré is Praia do Norte, home to the biggest surfable waves on the planet. Thanks to a deep underwater canyon that funnels and amplifies the Atlantic's power, this break produces monstrous waves that can exceed 80 feet. These are strictly for the world's elite big-wave surfers. For the rest of us, there's Praia do Nazaré, the town's main beach. While it doesn't have the same colossal size as its northern counterpart, it's still a powerful and challenging beach break with fast, punchy waves, especially in winter.

When to Go: Timing Your Swell Chase

The big wave season in Nazaré runs from October to April, with the most consistent giant swells typically arriving between November and February. This is when you'll have the best chance of witnessing the XXL surf that made the town famous. The summer months, from May to September, are much calmer. While you won't see the record-breaking giants, the waves at Praia do Nazaré can still be fun and punchy for intermediate and advanced surfers.

Who is it For: Skill Level Guide

Let's be clear: Nazaré is not a beginner's destination. The waves, even on the main beach, are powerful and unforgiving. This is a playground for experienced, confident surfers. Praia do Norte is exclusively for the pros. Intermediate surfers might find some manageable days in the summer at Praia do Nazaré, but should always exercise extreme caution. If you're just starting out, it's best to head to the more sheltered breaks of nearby Peniche or Ericeira.

What Makes Nazaré Unique?

It's the sheer, raw power of the ocean. There's nowhere else in the world where you can witness such a dramatic and consistent display of giant waves. The unique underwater topography of the Nazaré Canyon creates a natural wonder that draws surfers and spectators from all corners of the globe. The combination of this incredible natural phenomenon with the charm of a traditional Portuguese fishing village makes Nazaré a truly unforgettable surf destination.
