Bali is a year-round surf destination with two distinct seasons. The dry season (April to October) is the most popular, with consistent swells and offshore winds on the west coast, where you'll find famous breaks like Uluwatu and Canggu. The wet season (November to March) sees smaller swells on the west coast but the east coast comes alive with spots like Keramas offering world-class waves. For beginners, the shoulder months of April, May, September and October offer smaller, more manageable waves.
Bali caters to all skill levels, from complete beginners to seasoned professionals. Gentle, rolling waves perfect for learning can be found at beaches like Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu. Intermediate surfers can find more challenging waves at spots like Balangan and Dreamland. Advanced and expert surfers can test their skills on the world-renowned waves of Uluwatu and Padang Padang.
The water temperature in Bali is warm and tropical year-round, typically ranging from 27-29°C (80-84°F). You won't need a wetsuit, but a rashguard is recommended for sun protection.
Besides your usual travel essentials, be sure to pack swimwear, a rashguard for sun protection, and plenty of reef-safe sunscreen. A good pair of sunglasses and a hat are also essential. If you're bringing your own board, don't forget fins, a leash, and wax. A small first-aid kit with antiseptic wipes and bandages is also a good idea for any minor reef cuts.
Bali has a rich and unique culture, deeply rooted in Hinduism. You'll see beautiful temples and daily offerings everywhere. The local cuisine is delicious and affordable. Be sure to try famous Balinese dishes like 'Nasi Goreng' (fried rice), 'Mie Goreng' (fried noodles), and 'Sate' (grilled skewers). For a true taste of Bali, visit a local 'warung' (small family-owned restaurant).
Bali can be a very affordable surf destination. Accommodation can range from budget-friendly guesthouses to luxurious villas. A meal at a local warung can cost as little as a few dollars. Surf lessons and board rentals are also reasonably priced. You can find more information on our Bali surf camps page.
Bali is generally a safe destination for tourists and surfers. However, it's always wise to take precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially at night, and keep your valuables secure. When surfing, be mindful of the currents and reef breaks, and always surf within your limits. It's also a good idea to have travel insurance that covers surfing-related injuries.
Besides surfing, Bali offers a wealth of other attractions. You can explore ancient temples like Uluwatu and Tanah Lot, hike to stunning waterfalls, or visit the rice terraces of Ubud. For a taste of Balinese culture, you can watch a traditional dance performance or take a cooking class. There are also plenty of opportunities for yoga and meditation.
