The Legendary Coastline of New South Wales

New South Wales (NSW) is a surfer's paradise, boasting a 2,000km coastline dotted with everything from world-renowned point breaks to mellow beach breaks perfect for learning. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting, the sheer variety of waves and the vibrant surf culture make NSW an unforgettable surf destination.

Waves for Everyone

From the iconic breaks of Byron Bay in the north to the powerful waves of the South Coast, NSW has it all. You'll find a mix of:

  • Point Breaks: Legendary right-handers like Lennox Head and Crescent Head offer incredibly long rides.
  • Beach Breaks: Countless beach breaks like those in Sydney's Northern Beaches and the Central Coast provide fun peaks for all levels.
  • Reef Breaks: For the more adventurous, there are powerful reef breaks and slabs to be found, especially on the South Coast.

When to Go

While you can find waves in NSW year-round, the most consistent surf is during the winter months (June - August). This is when powerful south swells light up the coast, and the winds are often favorable. Autumn (March - May) is also a great time to visit, with pleasant weather, warm water, and the first of the winter swells.

For All Skill Levels

NSW is the perfect place to learn to surf, with numerous surf schools and gentle waves in protected corners. For intermediate and advanced surfers, the options are endless, with challenging waves that will push your limits. The variety of waves means you can always find a spot that suits your ability and the conditions.

The NSW Vibe

What makes surfing in NSW so special is the combination of world-class waves, stunning natural beauty, and a laid-back surf culture. From the bustling city beaches of Sydney to the tranquil surf towns of the North and South Coasts, there's a vibe to suit every surfer. With 11 of Australia's 21 National Surfing Reserves, NSW is a place where surfing is not just a sport, but a way of life.
