Surf Camps in A Coruña

A Coruña, perched on the rugged Galician coast of northwestern Spain, offers surfers a unique blend of powerful Atlantic swells and rich Celtic heritage. This historic port city serves as a gateway to some of Spain's most consistent and uncrowded waves.

About A Coruña

Located in the autonomous community of Galicia, A Coruña faces the open Atlantic Ocean, receiving consistent swells year-round. The region is known for its dramatic coastline, featuring rocky headlands, sandy coves, and world-class beach breaks. Unlike the crowded Mediterranean coast, Galicia remains relatively undiscovered by mainstream tourism, offering surfers the chance to score empty lineups even during peak swell seasons.

Surf Spots

The A Coruña area boasts several excellent surf spots suitable for all levels. Playa de Riazor and Playa del Orzán are the main city beaches, offering consistent waves right in the heart of town. For more adventurous surfers, the nearby Costa da Morte (Coast of Death) delivers powerful waves amid stunning, wild scenery. Spots like Pantin, home to an annual WSL event, showcase the quality of waves this region produces.

Best Time to Surf

The best surf season runs from September to April when Atlantic storms send consistent swells to the coast. Summer offers smaller, cleaner waves perfect for beginners. Water temperatures range from 13°C in winter to 18°C in summer, so a good wetsuit is essential year-round.

Local Culture

Beyond surfing, A Coruña offers incredible seafood, historic architecture including the ancient Tower of Hercules lighthouse, and the warm hospitality that Galicia is famous for. The local surf community is welcoming, and you'll find a growing number of surf schools and camps catering to visitors.

The best time to surf in A Coruña depends on your skill level. For beginners, the summer months from June to August offer smaller, more forgiving waves and the warmest water temperatures, around 17-20°C. If you are an intermediate or advanced surfer, you will find more consistent and powerful swells during the autumn and winter months. You can check out surf conditions for specific spots on our A Coruña surf guide.

A Coruña offers a variety of surf spots suitable for all skill levels. The main city beaches, Playa del Orzán and Playa de Riazor, are great for beginners and intermediates, with several peaks along the 1.5km stretch of sand. For more advanced surfers, the world-renowned break at Pantín, a short drive from the city, hosts international surf competitions and offers powerful waves. There are also numerous other beaches in the area that cater to different abilities, which you can explore on our Galicia surf map.

The water temperature in A Coruña varies throughout the year. In the summer, it averages a mild 17-20°C (63-68°F), where a 3/2mm wetsuit is usually sufficient. During the winter, the water can get as cold as 12°C (54°F), so a 4/3mm or even a 5/4mm wetsuit, along with booties and a hood, is recommended to stay warm. You can find more information on what to wear in our wetsuit guide.

For your surf trip to A Coruña, you should pack a wetsuit appropriate for the season, sunscreen, and a surfboard, although you can easily rent one at our A Coruña surf school. Surfing in A Coruña is generally safe, but it's important to be aware of the conditions and your own abilities. The city beaches are supervised by lifeguards during the summer months. It's always a good idea to surf with a buddy and to check the forecast for swell size and wind direction before you go out. If you're a beginner, we highly recommend taking a lesson at our surf school to learn about ocean safety and proper technique.

When you're not surfing, there are plenty of things to see and do in A Coruña. Don't miss the Tower of Hercules, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the oldest Roman lighthouse still in use.
